Many stories are inspired by real-life samurai Miyamoto Musashi and Akira Kurosawa films, however, Sakai also takes much inspiration from facets of Japanese society and folklore. Throughout this time, the comic has told the story of Miyamoto Usagi, a ronin samurai, who wanders an anthropomorphic feudal Japan doing good deeds. Cartoonist Stan Sakai has been creating Usagi Yojimbo since its inception in 1984. ![]()
